Amazon Is Hiring Staff to Bring TV Ads & Free TV Channels to Prime

It looks like we may have a deeper look into Amazon’s plans for TV. Recently Amazon posted a job listing in the UK to hire someone to lead efforts in free-to-air TV and advertising in Europe. From looking at the job posting, Amazon is planning to expand Amazon Channels in Europe into more free content.

“Channels have launched in US, UK and Germany and this is a new and fast-growing area within Prime Video. As part of this expansion, we are seeking a senior leader to join the European Channels & Sports team, based in London. This individual will be responsible for widening the content range with the development of free and advertising-funded channels,” Amazon said in their job listing that was first spotted by Tech Crunch.

Amazon has for some time stated the future of their TV effort is Amazon Channels. And Amazon plans to expand Amazon Channels outside of the US, UK, and Germany. Yet the job posting also gives us insight into what Amazon plans to do in the United States.

Currently, all the Amazon Channels content is paid, but Amazon may be trying to add free services to channels. This will let you use Amazon Video apps to manage and view not just premium content but open it up to free content as well.

This may also be a move to address the European Union rules to push more European content. Canada already has similar rules in place to prevent US TV from taking over all TV in Canada. So, what happens in the EU may not reflect what is happening in the US and now the UK.
