Amazon is Changing The Rules For Fire TV App Creators

Recently Amazon changed the rules for app creators on the Fire TV. Now if you want to show ads on the Fire TV you must give Amazon a 30% cut of ad revenue. In the past Amazon has let app creators keep  100% of their ad revenue according to AdAge.

Amazon also announced that starting next year apps showing ads on the Fir TV will be required to use to use Amazon’s ad network to serve these ads. This means apps like Sony Crackle, Pluto TV, Tubi, and more will have to switch to Amazon’s ad network or leave the Fire TV next year. This will also impact apps like NBC, ABC, and more that show ads on some of their free content.

Roku has similar terms and conditions and Apple’s cut of subscriptions through iTunes is well known. Now Amazon is joining the fight and starting next year.

This is a major change for Amazon and one that will likely have a long-term impact on the future of the Fire TV. For now many app creators are likely still deciding what they want to do next but if they want to be on the Fire TV they will have to play by the new rules.
