Amazon Fire TV Will Keep HBO Now App, Rebranded as HBO

With WarnerMedia’s deal with Amazon to keep the HBO Now app on Fire TV devices set to expire tomorrow, July 31, the two companies have come to an agreement. Fire TV users who use the HBO Now app will still have access to the app which will be rebranded as “HBO” on August 1.

While there were some rumors that Roku would be dropping HBO Now access, Variety reports that Roku already had a deal in place to keep the HBO app.

The agreement comes as Amazon and WarnerMedia continue to work through negotiations for making HBO Max available on Fire TV devices. The original plan was for HBO Now users to transition to HBO Max, but the lack of support on Fire TV and Roku has prevented many HBO viewers from upgrading. Nearly 30% of subscribers have not made the switch to HBO Max.

Amazon has been notifying customers of the update via email this week, along with reminding customers that HBO is also available through Amazon Prime Channels. HBO is also available as an add-on to many live TV streaming services and Fire TV users can continue to watch through those subscriptions as well.

Along with rebranding HBO Now to simply HBO, WarnerMedia is retiring HBO Go. The app will be discontinued on all platforms on July 31. Variety notes that for pay TV customers under a provider that does not yet have an HBO Max deal in place, HBO Go will still be available through August.
