Amazon Expands Free Local News on Fire TV to Cover 158 Cities

Amazon announced today that it has doubled the free local news stations available on its news experience on Fire TV. Live and on demand local news is now available for 158 cities across the US, with the number of local stations increasing from 126 to 259.

The expansion follows the initial launch with 12 cities and an expansion to 88 cities earlier this year.

“We’ve heard from our customers how important it is to stay informed on what’s happening in their communities and we’re proud that Amazon’s news app on Fire TV now covers over 90% of U.S. TV households,” said Charlotte Maines, Director of Amazon Fire TV. “With this expansion, Fire TV customers now have access to more stations across the US and we continue to invest in our local news coverage with 50 metros now offering more than one local news source.”

To access local news, just go to the Local News tab on the Amazon news app. Your Fire TV will automatically detect the closest city to you and add the local news station (or stations) in the tab. You can also access the news with your Alexa Voice Remote by saying “Alexa, play local news.”

The Amazon news app is free and customizable. The app is built in to the Fire TV experience on all Fire TV streaming devices and smart TVs. When you open the app for the first time, you’ll be able to select the type of news you want to see and a customized playlist will be generated based on your preferences.

The ad-supported app includes both local channels and national news channels like ABC News, Bloomberg TV+, Black News Channel, CBS News, CBS Sports HQ, Court TV, Estrella News, People TV, USA Today and more.
