Amazon Is Almost as Popular as Netflix with Cord Cutters

Recently Cord Cutters News finished our Fall 2017 Cord Cutting Survey. For years we have known that Netflix was the dominant service among cord cutters, but Amazon is now closing the gap and is almost tied with Netflix among cord cutters.

According to our survey of over 1,600 cord cutters, Netflix is still the most popular streaming service among cord cutters with 75.5% of all cord cutters subscribing; however, Amazon has seen strong growth and now 73.9% of all cord cutters use Amazon to stream movies and TV shows.

Our survey did not ask if you subscribe to the service but if you use the service to stream movies and TV shows. This removes the millions of Amazon Prime members who get the service for the free shipping, music, books, and more but do not use the video streaming service.

Hulu came in third place among video on-demand services at 39.6% and other services fell off sharply from there. WatchESPN was at 18.1%, and HBO NOW was at 11.3%.

Netflix is in the middle of a transitional time right now. According to some of its management, it is moving to a point of offering 50% of its content as Netflix Originals. FOX is pulling all of its shows and Disney has announced that in 2019 it will end its Netflix deal for new movies.

It will be interesting to see if Netflix can keep its lead among cord cutters as it faces stiffer competition and a shrinking catalog.
