Airbnb Wants to Join the Streaming World

In a report from Reuters, we learned that Airbnb is making plans to develop content for streaming.

Airbnb Inc., the company that allows users to book home rentals in cities around the world, has plans to create travel focused content. The company already has a magazine that features travel guides, highlights destinations all over the world, and offers travel tips to readers.

Now, insiders are saying that Chief Executive Brian Chesky wants to create a studio to produce shows, movies, and more travel related content.

According to the Reuters report, here’s what the company is envisioning.

For at least three years, Airbnb has batted around ideas for creating or licensing mini-series and documentaries about travel, and shows featuring Airbnb homes, guests and hosts, one of the people said. It has discussed working with studios as well as starting its own.

“We’re very much in the R&D phase here,” said Chris Lehane, Airbnb’s top policy and communications executive, adding that the company is considering streaming original content through their own app as well as developing shows for other platforms.

This wouldn’t be the first time Airbnb would be introducing content for the screen. The company has already created a series for Apple, called “Home” which showcases unique homes and their owners. There’s also a documentary called “Gay Chorus Deep South” which follows the San Francisco Gay Men’s Chorus as they travel through the southeastern US. That documentary is set to premier at the Tribeca Film Festival.
