A New YouTube Feature Makes Pausing and Unpausing Videos Less Jarring

YouTube has a wealth of features to help with your streaming binges, from audio-only capabilities to curating a queue of videos tailored to your viewing habits. Cord Cutters News noticed a new feature flying under the radar that slightly rewinds paused videos.

When we paused a video briefly, it resumed where we left off. But when we stopped it for an hour or more, YouTube resumed the video a few seconds earlier, giving us a quick reminder of what was going on before we hit play and continued as usual.

YouTube was not immediately available for comment.

YouTube typically makes announcements when a new feature debuts, but at times, the platform has made some adjustments without alerting anyone. Some features that warrant note are detailed in YouTube’s official blog

Users can now select “stable volume” to reduce jarring differences in volume. The feature is optional, but since its October 17 launch, it has been automatically enabled for users. You can adjust this under settings.

Additionally, users can adjust the playback speed of videos by pressing and holding down anywhere on the player to increase speed 2x. To resume normal play, let go, and the video will continue playing at its original speed. Playing a video faster can help you reach a particular segment or help students listen to online lectures quickly.

YouTube also made perusing videos simpler by launching bigger preview thumbnails when seeking. When you scroll the progress bar, you’ll see a larger image of what portion of the video you’re on to help you find a section easily. If you’ve changed your mind and want to resume the video from where you left off, move back to where you started and lift when you feel a vibration. To ensure your video doesn’t get interrupted by an accidental tap, check out YouTube’s new lock screen for mobile devices and tablets.
