A New & Convincing Netflix Scam is Making the Rounds

netflix-watchingFake emails and random phishing calls are nothing new; however, now there seems to be a new Netflix scam that is aggressively going around.

If you get an email from Netflix saying your payment failed and to please login so you can update your payment details don’t do it. So why is this scam so convincing?

Typically we tell people that if an email does not contain your name and uses something like Dear Netflix Customer it’s typically a spam, but this email will come with your name on it. (Assuming your name is on your email account.) It seems the spammers are working through a list of emails and are taking the time to inject your name into the email.

The second thing we have told many people is to always call the number you have for the organization if you are unsure, but this email has a phone number on it and the spammers took the time to get a number very close to Netflix’s real phone number. (Well Netflix’s international phone number…)

Netflix’s phone number for Europe is 0800 096 6379. The spammers took the time to get a number that only changes the last two numbers. (Yet if you live in the US and international number should also raise a red flag.)

So just be careful out there. The attempts to steal your personal information are getting more aggressive. So my suggestion is anytime you get an email asking you to change a password or update payment info do not click any links in the email. If you want to make sure everything is ok with your account head over to the Netflix site by typing in Netflix.com into your browser.

Hopefully that helps you avoid having your details stolen.
