Legendary Entertainment has joined forces with Scholastic Entertainment to bring a fresh live-action adaptation of the beloved children’s franchise The Magic School Bus to the big screen. Elizabeth Banks will take on the iconic role of the energetic and eccentric teacher Ms. Frizzle while also serving as a producer on the project. Rob Letterman, known for directing the 2019 film Detective Pikachu, has signed on to helm the movie and develop the initial treatment, according to Deadline.
This new venture marks an exciting revival for a property that has captivated young audiences for four decades. The Magic School Bus first appeared as a book series in 1986, created by author Joanna Cole and illustrator Bruce Degen. Published by Scholastic, the stories center on Ms. Valerie Frizzle and her classroom of curious students who embark on extraordinary field trips aboard a magical, shape-shifting school bus. These adventures take the group inside the human body, through outer space, deep into ecosystems, and across countless other imaginative locations that make science lessons fun and accessible. The franchise has sold more than 90 million books worldwide and expanded into various formats over the years, including spin-off series like Ms. Frizzle’s Adventures.

The live-action film arrives at a significant milestone, coinciding with the 40th anniversary of the original book series. Fans have long embraced the edutainment style that blends education with entertainment, inspiring generations to explore scientific concepts through creative storytelling. Previous screen versions include the popular 1994 to 1997 PBS animated series, which became one of the network’s top-rated programs for school-age children and featured Lily Tomlin as the voice of Ms. Frizzle. A later Netflix continuation titled The Magic School Bus Rides Again aired from 2017 to 2021, with Tomlin returning and Kate McKinnon portraying a related character. The books have also led to a touring stage musical, video games, and other merchandise that kept the world alive across multiple platforms.
Development of this feature follows an earlier attempt by Universal Pictures, which had announced plans for a live-action and animated hybrid version in 2020 involving Banks and producer Marc Platt. Rights to the project have since shifted, allowing Legendary to step in and reimagine the story for modern audiences. The production team brings together experienced professionals from both studios. Iole Lucchese and Caitlin Friedman produce for Scholastic, while Banks collaborates with Max Handelman and Alison Small through Brownstone Productions. Marc Platt and Adam Siegel contribute from Marc Platt Productions, and Mary Parent, Ali Mendes, and Cale Boyter represent Legendary.
Elizabeth Banks brings substantial star power and creative vision to the lead role. The actress recently appeared in the Peacock series The Miniature Wife alongside Matthew Macfadyen. She is also set to executive produce and star in an upcoming Apple TV half-hour comedy series created by Liz Heldens and Matt Ward. Banks has built a versatile career across comedy, drama, and action genres, making her a fitting choice to embody the whimsical yet knowledgeable Ms. Frizzle. Her involvement ensures the film will balance nostalgia with contemporary appeal for both longtime fans and new viewers.
Rob Letterman adds strong directorial credentials to the project. After guiding the live-action and CGI blend in Detective Pikachu, he has experience merging fantastical elements with grounded storytelling. His other credits include the 2015 Goosebumps adaptation starring Jack Black and animated features like Shark Tale and Casper. He is currently working on a new Goosebumps television series for Disney+ and Hulu. Letterman’s ability to handle family-friendly spectacles positions him well to capture the transformative bus journeys and educational wonder that define the franchise.
Legendary Entertainment continues to expand its slate with ambitious titles. The studio has several high-profile projects in development, including Alejandro G. Iñárritu’s Digger starring Tom Cruise, Dune: Part Three, a Magic: The Gathering adaptation, a Street Fighter film, a live-action Gundam movie for Netflix, and the hybrid comedy Animal Friends. The Magic School Bus fits naturally into this portfolio, promising visual effects that bring the bus’s transformations and wild destinations to vivid life on screen.
As pre-production advances, expectations will build around how the filmmakers translate the sentient bus and its magical capabilities into live-action sequences. Potential storylines might draw from popular book titles or create original missions that reflect current educational interests, such as environmental science, space exploration, or emerging technologies. With Banks leading the classroom and Letterman guiding the journey, the project holds promise as a bright addition to family cinema. Audiences can look forward to a fresh take that honors the spirit of curiosity and discovery at the heart of The Magic School Bus.
