As part of this announcement, broadcasters stated they will begin transmitting ATSC 3.0 TV in 2020. ATSC 3.0 is currently being testing in markets like Phoenix and Dallas, but 2020 is the date set for public roll out of the service including devices to receive ATSC 3.0.
Once 3.0 rolls out, your TV will still work as by law TV stations still have to offer the current ATSC 1.0 standard for five more years after they make the switch to the 3.0 standard. Your current antenna will also work with the 3.0 standard, but you may need to buy an adapter to plug your antenna into because your TV may not be 3.0 OTA TV ready. (This is similar to the digital transition about 10 years ago.)
What is ATSC 3.0?
ATSC 3.0 is a new standard that will bring a long list of new features to over-the-air TV. Two main features that will really excite cord cutters are 4K HDR picture with better sound and better over-the-air TV coverage. There are other great features such as detailed custom weather alerts and internet active news stories too.
