A Cord Cutters Look at the First Half of 2015

So far, 2015 has been a good year for cord cutters. New services and content are flooding the market, making cord cutting more attractive every week. So let’s review some highlights.

Sling TV

In January, Sling TV burst onto the market with great channels, like ESPN, taking cord cutting by storm. Now you legally can access many great shows and live sporting events for only $20 a month. Sling TV had such a huge impact on the market that Mohu’s CEO reported antenna sales at big box stores doubled after Sling TV was announced.

Sling TV has changed everything, leaving a permanent mark on how people consume content.

HBO Now

Previously, HBO was often one of the main reasons people kept cable. You no longer need to pay a cable company just so you can pay even more for HBO. HBO Now allows you to subscribe directly to HBO for access to all of their content.

Increasingly, with services like HBO Now, you can cancel cable and still access all the content you want.

Hulu

Hulu has spent 2015 remaking themselves in an effort to turn things around. They are adding content more quickly, rebranding Hulu Plus, and talking about reducing the number of ads they show.

Even if you are not a fan of Hulu, a more competitive Hulu will only draw more out Netflix and Amazon in their attempts to keep up.

Set Top Boxes

This has been a great year for cord cutting hardware. Apple TV dropped its price to $69, new Rokus were released, Fire TV is adding great new features every month, and Android TV finally arrived with several new boxes and more on the way.

There are rumors that new and better hardware will be out later this year, making what we have now look old and out dated. Never before have there been so many great options for cord cutters.

Content

Every month Netflix and Amazon are releasing great new original content. Most of the must-watch shows of 2015 have been available online for cord cutters. Many of them on Amazon and Netflix, but others are available with Sling TV and HBO Now.

In the past if you didn’t have cable you were left out, now without Netflix you’re left out.

It has been a great year for cord cutters—and there’s still half the year left! We’re looking forward to seeing what happens!
