93 Local Stations Just Started Streaming Free Online

This week Gray Television announced that they have teamed up with SBTV to stream their 93 local stations online. With this deal Gray Television affiliates will be able to stream their local programming and a host of other content for free through their apps, website, the SBTV app, and a host of live TV streaming partners.

“We’re very excited about the possibilities for our live local programming,” said Julia Campbell, vice president of media systems, Gray Television. “With SBTV this past March, our station KTUU in Anchorage, Alaska was able to carry the Iditarod dogsled race live locally and build an audience nationwide.”

“SBTV gives our stations the tools we need to deliver our own, unique, hyperlocal OTT channels,” said Brian Brady, CEO of Northwest Broadcasting. “And, since Syncbak is the leader in providing linear feeds to the vMVPDs, I know every one of my stations is ready for subscription OTT as well.”

SBTV is similar to NewsON, a free service that lets you watch your local news online. Like NewsON, there is a single app. Sadly, though, it is for now only on mobile devices such as Android and iOS. Individual affiliates may have an app on Roku, Fire TV, Apple TV, and other services, but there is no single app to access all of them.

With SBTV you will not only get local news but a long list of other local programs that the locals decided to produce and stream online.

Although SBTV may not stream your local prime time content this does open up local programming to millions of Americans who live in areas where an antenna may not be an option. Hopefully, more networks like Gray Television use services such as SBTV and NewsON to bring their content to the world for free.
