70% of Roku Users Stream Free Ad-Supported Content on Services like Pluto TV, The Roku Channel, & More

Today during Roku’s 4th quarter 2019 earnings call Roku announced that 70% of Roku users stream free ad-supported content on services like Pluto TV, The Roku Channel, and more.

This comes as Roku reported that the Average Revenue Per User (ARPU) has increased $5.19 year over year to $23.14. Roku noted that advertising played a big part in that increase, with monetizable video ad impressions outpacing growth in streaming time. With the growth of services like The Roku Channel and Pluto TV have helped Roku see this growth.

Roku is betting big that most of its revenue will come from ads and subscriptions. By selling its players cheap Roku hopes to make more from the ads. So far that plan has paid off for Roku. The question now is will this growth of free ad-supported streaming services will continue in 2020.
