7 Things to Know About Switching from Cable to Sling TV

The most important step in becoming a cord cutter is to actually cut the cord, and do away with your cable subscription. For many beginners, the idea of completely doing away with something that they have owned for years can be overwhelming and will raise a lot of questions.

Perhaps the biggest of these questions is: What now? Now that you have done away with cable, what can/should you do to still enjoy your favorite live shows? While there’s no one way to answer that, we do have a few ideas about Sling TV, a  live TV streaming service, that we think might be helpful. Here’s what you need to know.

Sling TV offers two plans

Sling TV Blue and Sling TV Orange are both priced at $30/month Each of these plans offers a different selection of channels and programs. Sling TV’s website describes the Blue option as being good for “news” and “entertainment,” while the Orange option is good for “sports” and “families.” The service also allows you to purchase a Sling TV Blue + Orange plan for $45/month.

It’s one of the cheapest live TV services out there

Comparing the cost of Sling TV to that of Hulu + Live TV or Youtube TV, you’ll find that Sling TV cost significantly less than these two options. The low price point of the service makes it a perfect option for cord cutters looking for an affordable live TV option.

Sling TV has over 30 live TV channels

The Blue and Orange plans give you access to different channels respectively. But combined, the plans give you access to over 70 channels. You should also know that Sling TV has very few local channels, and you may need an antenna if you are hoping to watch the local news or other programming.

You can watch Sling TV on almost any device

The service is compatible with a lot of devices out now, both old and new. The following are all compatible with the service:

There are only a few devices that are not compatible with the services, most of which are older gaming systems. The following are not compatible with the service:

You can purchase additional DVR storage

Many Sling TV subscribers recommend purchasing additional Cloud DVR storage to record programming, skip programming, and pause your recordings at any time. All Sling TV plans come with 10 hours of DVR storage, which you can quickly exhaust if you are sharing your plan among family members. An extra 50 hours of DVR storage will cost about $5/month and can make a major difference in the way you stream.

The service offers three promotional deals

New users can try Sling TV for free for three days. At the end of your three day trial, you’ll be charged the regular $30 or $45 monthly fee. Currently, the service is giving away a free Mini Air TV when you subscribe and prepay two months of your subscription. The Air TV is valued at $79.99. Last, you can get Sling TV + Starz, EPIX, and/or Showtime for $20 for your first month. Cord cutters should know at the end of your first month, you will incur charges for Sling TV and each of the additional premium channel add-ons you choose.

You can stream on multiple screens at once with Sling Blue

One of the most appealing features of the Sling Blue plan is its ability to allow users to watch live TV on three screens at once. For cord cutters who may share the service with others, this can be an attractive feature. The service also allows you to upgrade your plan to unlimited screening for an additional charge. All upgrades, including this one, give users a free month trial upon purchase.

There’s a lot to know about Sling TV, and we expect new features to launch with the service in the future. For now, we hope these points help you stay in the know.
