Carol Brady – The Brady Bunch
- Original Run: 1969–1974
- Seasons: 5
- Episodes: 117
- Where to Watch: Paramount+ | Pluto TV
Carol Brady was more than just a mom, she was the glue that held The Brady Bunch together. Played by Florence Henderson, Carol wasn’t afraid to take on the challenges of a blended family with six kids, a dog, and a house full of constant shenanigans. With patience, style, and a perpetually sunny attitude, she was the definition of grace under pressure.
During its original run, The Brady Bunch never cracked the top 30 in Nielsen ratings, but reruns in syndication turned it into a cultural phenomenon. Due to the show’s impact off screen, the matriarch iconic shag haircut, known as “The Carol,” became a trend nationwide. The show still airs six decades later, impacting generations of viewers, and Carol placed second in the Today Show’s 2025 Best TV Mom bracket.
Marge Simpson – The Simpsons
- Original Run: 1989–present
- Seasons: 36 (and counting)
- Episodes: 782+
- Where to Watch: Hulu | Fubo | DIRECTV | Disney+ | FOX app
Towering with her iconic blue hair that was based on the Bride of Frankenstein and the patience for her family’s tactics, Marjorie Bouvier “Marge” Simpson is perhaps the most legendary mom in animation. Voiced by Julie Kavner, Marge is one of the only characters to appear in every single episode of The Simpsons and is the moral compass of the Springfield-set animated sitcom. Her steady presence in a world of chaos with Homer, Bart, Lisa, and Maggie, and her raspy voice have made her one of the most iconic characters to grace the small screen.
In 2007, Marge and her family made their debut on the silver screen in The Simpsons Movie (streaming on Disney+), which was met with critical and financial success. The show is the longest-running animated TV series in U.S. history, celebrating its 100th episode 31 years ago, and has been renewed through Season 40, meaning Marge and the loveable cast of characters are here to stay.
Florida Evans – Good Times
- Original Run: 1974–1979
- Seasons: 6
- Episodes: 133
- Where to Watch: Prime Video | Peacock | Philo | Tubi
Before Florida Evans had her own show, she was first seen as the housekeeper on Maude. But it wasn’t long before she became the heart of Good Times, a groundbreaking sitcom about a working-class Black family living in a Chicago housing project. Florida, played with wisdom and heart by Esther Rolle, wasn’t afraid to speak her mind, fight for her children, or go toe-to-toe with life’s toughest realities.
Good Times made history as the first African-American two-parent sitcom when it aired on CBS. Esther Rolle left the show for a season due to creative differences, as she wanted more realistic portrayals of Black family life and less focus on the comic relief character J.J. She returned for the final season after producers promised changes. The show still airs in syndication to this day and even spanned a reimagined animated revival series, Good Times (streaming on Netflix).
Morticia Addams – The Addams Family
- Original Run: 1964–1966
- Seasons: 2
- Episodes: 64
- Where to Watch: Prime Video | Pluto TV
The matriarch of The Addams Family, Morticia Frump Addams, was the gothic glam queen long before Halloween moms made it mainstream. Played by Carolyn Jones, Morticia was elegant, mysterious, and utterly devoted to her quirky clan. While she might not fit the “traditional mom” mold, Morticia was fiercely loving, deeply passionate, and always encouraged her children to embrace their weirdness.
In the original series, Morticia’s relationship with Gomez broke sitcom norms, showcasing a married couple with real chemistry and affection. Created by cartoonist Charles Addams, The Addams Family has been remade and adapted numerous times over the past six decades, with Wednesday (streaming on Netflix) being the most recent.
Aunt Vivian Banks – The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air
Known as the star-making vehicle for rapper-turned-actor Will Smith, The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air was a huge hit with an iconic theme song, and in 2022, the series spawned a dramatic remake, Bel-Air (streaming on Peacock). Whether it was the sharp-witted, strong-willed Aunt Viv played by Janet Hubert or the softer (but still savvy) version portrayed by Daphne Maxwell Reid, one thing was clear: Aunt Viv was the backbone of the Banks family. She balanced career, culture, and motherhood with elegance and could dance circles around her kids. Aunt Viv wasn’t just Will’s aunt; she was a role model for young Black women on TV.
The original Aunt Viv (Janet Hubert) was a Juilliard-trained actress and dancer. Her departure was surrounded by years of speculation, but in 2020, she and Will Smith reconciled on the Fresh Prince Reunion special (streaming on Max), bringing a full-circle closure to one of TV’s biggest casting controversies.
