Here are five things to keep an eye out for in 2018:
4K Support
During an interview with vice president of PlayStation Vue, Dwayne Benefield, talked about the possibility of 4K coming to PlayStation Vue. He hinted that Sony would like to add 4K, but that content providers needed more 4K content before they would add 4K support.
This interview is over a year old, and most of everything Benefield talked about came true including Multiview and more locals.
Going International
During the same interview, one of the biggest bombshells was that PlayStation Vue was planning on going global. Benefield mentioned the possibility of launching in Europe. For now, he says Sony is just looking at its options and has not committed to any new markets yet.
fuboTV recently was one of the first live TV streaming services to launch internationally. DIRECTV NOW has reportedly also looked into launching internationally but no date has been set.
More Features
In a more recent interview, Benefield said that PlayStation Vue plans to add more enhancements and features, but he declined to comment on what they are working on. He did add that PlayStation Vue updates their apps every two to three weeks. We have already seen this start with PlayStation Vue adding deeper integration with the Fire TV and Apple TV. Look for more moves like this in the future.
Locals
PlayStation Vue was once the service with the most live locals. After some fights with Sinclair and Tribune, they fell behind YouTube and Hulu. In 2018, PlayStation Vue quickly added more locals by re-adding Sinclair and Tribune locals.
Recently Sony stated that locals would be one of their main focuses going forward, and they still have a long way to go. Expect to see more locals added to PlayStation Vue in 2019.
More Partnerships
In late 2018, Sony teamed up with Apple and Amazon to better integrate PlayStation Vue into the Apple TV and Fire TV. Look for this to be just the start of Sony’s efforts to make PlayStation Vue’s experience better on more streaming players.
