48.9% of Americans Plan to Leave Their Pay TV Provider This Year

Worried couple reading a letter sitting on a couch in the living room at home2017 has already been a bad year for cable executives, but it’s about to get a lot worse.

According to a new study by Tivo (formally Digitalsmiths) 48.9% of pay-TV customers are thinking about leaving their current provider.

About 17.3% are definitely planning to leave their current provider with over 31.6% saying they may be leaving their provider this year. Only 51.1% said they plan to stay with their current provider.

That has to be a shocking number with about roughly half of subscribers seeming so unhappy that they plan to leave or are seriously thinking about it.

The worst part is this unhappy is coming at a time when it is easier than ever for Americans to leave their pay-TV provider. Recently DIRECTV NOW, Hulu, and YouTube TV all launched live TV streaming services. Other services such as Sling TV, PlayStation Vue, and Fubo TV are already well established.

Soon even more live TV streaming services will hit the market. Comcast, CenturyLink, and Verizon all have plans to expand or release a live TV streaming service. Even smaller companies such as Vidgo are still out there working on a live TV streaming service.

It seems for the first time Americans have real options to get their live TV, and cable companies do not know how to handle competition. The only question now is what will happen next.
