Both the NBA and the NHL stopped mid-season earlier this year, MLB has missed its opening day mark by more than a month now. All three leagues are currently planning a return of some sort, but it’s almost certain they’ll do so sans spectators.
But is that what fans want? In a recent survey conducted by ESPN, 65% of people said they’d tune in to watch a live game without spectators in attendance. That means the “bring sports back ASAP” crowd is overwhelmingly more – double the “let’s wait it out” crowd – but a full 35% of people want sports paused until fans can physically be there.
Considering how much of an impact sports have on society, it’s interesting so many want to wait. In fact, almost 70% of people who responded to this survey said they feel like sports (even without a crowd there) would help things feel normal again.
As evidenced by record-breaking numbers for the NFL draft and The Last Dance documentary, there’s clearly a desire for sports content right now. And even though most people just want sports to come back in some way, a small contingent wants to wait until we get the whole thing.
