When you figure it out you will realize that not only are you saving money but your TV watching is also easier than ever. So here are 3 tips I have found helpful after I ditched cable TV.
#1 Don’t be afraid to switch streaming services.
The great thing about cord cutting is the ability to dump and pick up streaming services at will. Have HBO, but your favorite shows are over for the year? Why not dump HBO and pick up Showtime for a month to watch their back catalog?
Do you use Sling TV just for football season? Why not cancel it until the season starts up again?
Are your favorite shows on Hulu over for a few months? Just put Hulu on hold for the summer. This little trick will give you a ton of content and keep your costs low.
That is the great thing about cord cutting—you are not tied into a contract and can switch between services to keep your costs low.
#2 Rescan for channels with your OTA antenna
Did you know over five new over-the-air channels came out in 2015? I recently rescanned with my Tablo DVR and found out we had two new OTA networks. One of them is a new sci-fi network with a ton of great content!
If it has even been just a few months maybe you should rescan to see if you have any new channels.
#3 Look for shows not networks.
Often people get caught up on the idea that they want to find FOX online. Do you really want FOX or the shows on FOX?
Start thinking about shows rather than networks. Services like Hulu, Amazon, and Netflix are the new “networks” of cord cutting. Many of the shows you want are available through these services, and the official FOX Roku Channel blocks you if you are not a cable subscriber.
These are just a few tips, but they should help you take a big step to break free from cable TV. Cord cutting is amazing once you get used to it, so do not lose hope early if you run into a road block.
