In Dallas, the test has partnered with Dish to provide the spectrum that is best used. The Phoenix test has been led by Pearl TV, a collaboration of E.W. Scripps Company, Fox Television Stations, Meredith Local Media Group, Nexstar Media Group, TEGNA Inc., Telemundo Station Group, Univision Communications, and providers of professional broadcast equipment.
“We’re seeking innovative ways of bringing next generation technologies and services, like ATSC 3.0, to American consumers,” Tom Cullen, Dish’s executive vice president of corporate development,” said in a statement. “This trial helps us not only pursue opportunities with ‘Next Gen’ TV technology, but also identify synergies with our IoT and future 5G plans, for example broadcasting data to connected cars.”
10 Phoenix television stations have announced plans to launch 3.0 TV. These stations include the local ABC, NBC, CBS, FOX, CW, Telemundo, Univision, UniMas, and MyTV stations. Phoenix will, therefore, be the first city in the United States to offer 3.0 TV. Right now though Telemundo is the only station testing 3.0 OTA TV.
The plan is to have the 10 stations share broadcasts towers with some remaining at the current standard offering simulcasts of the 3.0 broadcast for older TVs. Other stations will offer broadcasts of the 3.0 standard. This way no one is forced to upgrade for an additional five years.
