29 Years Ago Today MSNBC Launched Now Comcast Prepares to Spinoff The Cable TV Network

Today marks the 29th anniversary of MSNBC’s launch on July 15, 1996, a pivotal moment in cable news history when Microsoft and NBC joined forces to create a groundbreaking news channel blending technology and journalism. As the network celebrates nearly three decades on air, it faces a new chapter with Comcast’s plan to spin off MSNBC and other cable networks into a new publicly traded company, signaling a transformative shift for the liberal-leaning outlet.

MSNBC was born from a strategic partnership between NBC News and Microsoft, its name a portmanteau of “MSN” and “NBC.” Launched as a competitor to CNN, the channel initially occupied the cable space of NBC’s short-lived America’s Talking network. Microsoft invested $221 million for a 50% stake in the channel, while both companies shared the cost of a $200 million newsroom in Secaucus, New Jersey. The first broadcast, anchored by Jodi Applegate, featured a mix of rolling news, interviews, and interactive programming, including The Contributors with commentators like Ann Coulter and Laura Ingraham. MSNBC.com, the channel’s online counterpart, also debuted, capitalizing on the emerging internet to deliver news with a technological edge.

In its early years, MSNBC struggled to compete with CNN and Fox News, cycling through various formats and hosts, including conservative figures like Michael Savage and Tucker Carlson. Microsoft divested its stake in the channel in 2005 and the website in 2012, with the latter rebranded as NBCNews.com to align with NBC News. Under new leadership, MSNBC pivoted to a liberal-leaning identity, particularly in primetime, with hosts like Keith Olbermann, Rachel Maddow, and Chris Hayes. This shift boosted viewership, and by the 2020s, MSNBC became the second most-watched cable news network, averaging 593,000 total day viewers in Q1 2025, behind Fox News but ahead of CNN, according to Nielsen data. The Rachel Maddow Show remains a standout, ranking among the top cable news programs.

However, the rise of streaming and cord-cutting has challenged cable news. On November 20, 2024, Comcast announced plans to spin off MSNBC, CNBC, USA, Oxygen, E!, SYFY, and Golf Channel into a new company, tentatively called Versant, valued at $7 billion. Set to be completed by late 2025, the spinoff will separate MSNBC from NBC News, raising questions about its access to NBC’s reporting resources and the iconic peacock logo. Mark Lazarus, who will lead Versant, has indicated that MSNBC’s name and identity may change, given Microsoft’s long-ended involvement. The network’s reliance on opinion programming, with stars like Maddow commanding high salaries (reportedly $30 million annually), faces scrutiny amid declining viewership post-2024 election.

As MSNBC reflects on its 29-year journey from a tech-driven experiment to a progressive powerhouse, the spinoff looms as a test of its adaptability in a rapidly evolving media landscape.
