How to lower Your Internet Bill

Access to the Internet is becoming an important part of every American’s life. Not just for cord cutting but everything from work to banking is done online; however, the cost of Internet can easily get out of control if you are not careful.

The following are a few tips on how to lower your Internet bill.

Shop Around

Shopping around is most important when you are looking at downgrading from a bundle to Internet only. Cable companies especially seem to hate giving any type of discount to someone who wants to downgrade. For example, my local cable company will charge a new customer $29.99 for 100 Mbps down, but customers who downgrade to the same plan pay more than double at $70 a month.

Take a moment, do some research, and do not discount DSL. I often switch between DSL and cable. You may be surprised to see AT&T DSL in some areas even offers a 1 Gbps option and 100 down DSL is more common than you may think. Don’t want to go with AT&T or CenturyLink? Maybe look into some of the smaller DSL companies such as Toast.net.

Even If You Don’t Want to Switch IPs Know What They Have To Offer

I often hear people say they don’t want to switch Internet providers. I do find you can still often get the best deals when you know what the other providers have to offer.

Saying “I hear your competitor is offering a cheaper Internet price” is a lot more effective than just asking for a price drop.

For example, AT&T is offering 50 Mbps down internet for $40 a month plus a $50 Visa rewards card.

Fios has a special on its Internet service. Right now Fios from Verizon was recently offering 50 down and 50 up for just $39.99 plus it will pay any early termination fees up to $500.

These are just a few examples of great deals to take advantage of or to use to get your current ISP to offer a lower rate. So shop around, do your research, and find out what is available in your area.
