Netflix has commissioned Simon and Jonathan Chinn’s Lightbox in association with Doug Liman’s Hypnotic to produce a documentary series “Captive,” which looks at the murky world of hostage-taking.
Simon Chinn is best known as the producer of Oscar-winning documentaries “Man on Wire” and “Searching for Sugar Man.” His cousin Jonathan Chinn was a producer on Emmy Award-winning “American High” and PGA award nominee “30 Days.”
“Hostage taking is an issue that people are familiar with, but apart from those directly involved, nobody really knows much about,” said Simon Chinn and Jonathan Chinn, co-founders of Lightbox. “Each episode of ‘Captive’ will reflect the tension that arises from the life and death stakes involved but also truly reveal the complexity inherent in every hostage crisis.”
“We are incredibly proud to be partnering with this exceptional team of storytellers to bring this project to Netflix,” said Lisa Nishimura, Netflix VP of original documentary programming. “This series pairs Lightbox’s experience making award-winning narrative documentaries with the cinematic pedigree of Doug Liman, whose renowned body of work has established him as a true expert in the portrayal of covert affairs, reconnaissance and espionage.”
CAPTIVE delves into the terse, dangerous world of hostage negotiation. Victims, negotiators, and kidnappers give an unprecedented look at what it means to be captive. On Netflix December 9.
