Looking for Movies? Don’t Look at Netflix…

netflix-movies-expiring-jan-2014Netflix has long been known as a leader is online movie rentals. Now, sadly for Netflix subscribers, it looks like Netflix is no longer a leader in online movie streaming.

According to new research from Barclays Netflix has fallen to third place now with fewer movies than Amazon Prime Video and Hulu.

The study showed Netflix had at that time 4,563 movies, and that may sound like a lot until you find out Amazon Prime Video has 18,405 movies and Hulu has 6,656 movies.

Many have assumed for some time that Netflix would have more content than other services, however, they have been losing content over the last two years. Overall a different recent look at the Netflix catalog found it is noticeably smaller in 2016 than it was in 2014. Much of the loss comes from ending contracts with Epix, which moved over to Hulu, and other networks such as Discovery.

Netflix is banking on their hope that Netflix’s original content will attract people by offering higher quality content even if that means fewer movies and TV shows will be available in the long run. However, in the long run this could mean Netflix would win the battle of content because their original movies and TV shows stay on their service without the risk of being pulled at the end of a contract.

Time will tell if this move will pay off for Netflix, but other studies have suggested Netflix’s original shows are far more popular than content they get from other networks.
