Everything We Know About the Roku 4

Now that we have a new Fire TV and a new Apple TV and it sounds like a new Chromecast will come out later this month the question is when will a new Roku come out? It is hard to say because very little has leaked out since the updated Roku 3 was released earlier this year.

Back in December 2014 we reported that a new Roku 4 was likely in the spring of 2015. We listed several features including new apps, 4K, faster processor, and more, and we were right. Roku released a 4K Roku TV and updated the Roku 3 with all the other features on the device.

So now that all the expected features of a Roku 4 are already in the Roku 3 should we expect a new Roku 4 this year? Sadly it is unlikely that we will see a new Roku 4 this year but it is not impossible.

Why We Should Not Expect a Roku 4 This Year

Roku has a long history of releasing Rokus in the spring or early summer. The first generation Roku came out in May, the second generation in July, and the third generation was announced in March. The last refresh of the Roku lineup came out in April. With that track record we would expect Roku to continue to release their new models in spring or summer 2016.

I also think it is unlikely that we will see a Roku 4 for a few reasons. There has been no FCC leak like there was with the Fire TV. The lack of a leak now leads us to believe there will be no new device because stores rarely want a major new product to come out between Thanksgiving and Christmas since they are so busy but it has happened before.

Also Roku is not known for keeping secrets. The lack of any hard leaks about the Roku 4 like there was about the refresh of the Roku 3 adds to the feeling that it will not happen this year.

Could the Roku 4 still come out this year?

The Roku 4 could still come out in 2015 but it is less likely every day. If it does come out this year we hope they do not rush it just to get it on the market. Roku has a history of waiting until they have a well-made device, and we hope they continue to deliver on their reputation.
