AT&T’s live TV streaming service, DIRECTV NOW, is really taking off. We recently learned that in the fourth quarter of 2016 AT&T added about 200,000 DIRECTV NOW subscribers. Now we learned that it added an additional 200,000 subscribers in the first quarter of 2017.
In total DIRECTV NOW is said to have 400,000 subscribers according to Discovery CEO David Zaslav. What is even more surprising is that DIRECTV NOW has about the same number of subscribers as PlayStation Vue according to Zaslav. Even though PlayStation Vue had a huge head start by releasing over a year before DIRECTV NOW.
Sadly Discovery does not have a deal with Sling TV so David Zaslav was unable to give any details about Sling TV subscriber count. Although we don’t have confirmed numbers, back in October it was reported that Sling TV had almost 700,000 subscribers. Now it is speculated that Sling TV has well over a million subscribers and some are predicting 2 million or more by the end of 2017.
That would mean that Sling TV has more subscribers than PlayStation Vue and DIRECTV NOW combined.
Sadly these services do not report official subscriber numbers. When they do report numbers, they often mix them with their traditional pay-TV services. So we have to look to experts and individuals such as David Zaslav who have inside details.
What we do know is that live TV streaming services are seeing strong growth. No wonder Comcast, Hulu, and YouTube all want to get in on live TV streaming.
