Comcast Has Started to Roll Out Their New Data Caps

comcastboxYou may remember a few months ago when Comcast announced they were doing away with their 300GB data caps in favor of a new 1TB cap. Comcast is starting to roll out the new caps effective November 1, 2016, which are expected to go nationwide over the next year.

According to the Comcast Xfinity email notifying customers Comcast says you can “stream between 600 and 700 hours of HD video, play more than 12,000 hours of online games, or download 60,000 high-res photos in a month.”

That may seem great and for more cord cutters it is really all they need but we are likely to continue to run into data cap issues with 4K coming and more households having multiple streams going at once that cap will be quickly eaten up.

Comcast claims in the email that less than 1 percent of customers use that amount of data in a month but if you are one of them you can buy unlimited data for an extra $50 a month. This is a similar argument that was used back with 250GB data caps first rolled out; however, as with all things in technology what seems more than adequate today is likely to be causing issues in a few years.

Again for most cord cutters this won’t be an issue, but for others it is likely to cause issues and the number of people going over their 1TB cap is likely to increase every month.
